First adopted as an official state slogan in 1957, Louisiana's status as a "Sportsman's Paradise" has long been at odds with conservationist efforts to protect the native flora and fauna of the Bayou Region. Dr. Jacob Gautreaux, adjunct instructor of history at the University of Louisiana at Lafayette, traces the history of this paradoxical paradise, focusing specifically on the role of local knowledge in unlocking resources for conservation while raising questions of what the future holds for our endangered ecosystem.
