Dr. Jacob Gautreaux, adjunct instructor of history at the University of Louisiana at Lafayette, traces the history of this paradoxical paradise, focusing specifically on the role of local knowledge in unlocking resources for conservation while raising questions of what the future holds for our endangered ecosystem.
