World War I was pivotal in shaping the modern Middle East. This three-week lecture series explores how the war’s legacy continues to impact the region as many countries grapple with the political, social, and economic challenges that emerged in its aftermath.
Dr. Karl Roider, Alumni Professor Emeritus of Louisiana State University, will lead lectures and open discussions on The Making of Today’s Middle East. For four centuries, the Middle East belonged to the Ottoman Empire, a Muslim state ruled by Turks. Then came World War I, and the European powers made deals among themselves to see which would rule the remnants. This series will present the turmoil the Middle East has been in since then.
