Ernest J. Gaines’ award-winning novel, A Lesson Before Dying, depicts South Louisiana during the 1940s and tells the story of a Black man accused of robbery and the murder of a white man.
Dr. Shelisa Theus, an Assistant Professor of English at Baton Rouge Community College (BRCC), will help foster understanding of the story written by Gaines in 1993. Linguistics and technical writing, along with African American Literature with an emphasis on Women and Gender Studies, are the foundation for her pedagogical approach. She has also completed extensive training in Cultural Responsiveness to enhance her approach to equity and inclusion.
