Become a Tutor

Thank you for your interest in becoming a tutor. Tutoring gives you the opportunity to make a difference in a person’s life and to enrich your own.

A tutor helps an individual learner improve their reading, writing, and speaking skills to reach a variety of goals: obtaining employment, helping a child with homework, and reading to a grandchild, to name just a few. The tutor and learner meet weekly for a minimum of 3 hours each week. Tutors complete tutor training on teaching adults. The APL staff assess all learners entering the tutoring program and assigns them to tutors.

Volunteer Requirements

  • Tutors must be 21 years of age or older and possess a high school diploma or equivalent. No previous teaching or tutoring experience required.
  • Tutors must have the ability to be sensitive, patient, and understanding of the learner's situation, goals, and needs.
  • Tutors must be able to read, write, and speak English fluently.
  • Tutors must successfully complete the Tutor Orientation provided by the library.

To volunteer as a tutor fill out and submit the Volunteer Interest Form.
