Donald Beale, director of Online Distance Learning with LSU Online and Continuing Education, will meet weekly to discuss the themes and styles in these iconic movies.
July 6: Roman Holiday (1953, 118m)
Audrey Hepburn won an Academy Award for Best Actress as Ann, a beautiful princess, on a European publicity tour. During a stop in Rome, Ann sneaks away from her embassy, determined to see the Eternal City on her terms. A hard-bitten newspaperman (Gregory Peck), hiding that he's a reporter, spends the day with her to get a scoop but finds himself falling for the young royal. This film is not rated.
July 13: Midnight in Paris (2011, 94m)
This romantic comedy set in Paris is about a family that goes there because of business, and two young people who are engaged to be married in the fall have experiences there that change their lives. It's about a young man's (Owen Wilson) great love for a city, Paris, and people’s illusion that a life different from theirs would be much better. This film is rated PG-13 for mild profanity and sexual references.
July 20: Schultze Gets the Blues (2003, 109m)
Salt miner Schultze (Horst Krause) is forced into retirement. He lapses into the boredom of his small German town. An accordion player, the retiree sometimes plays polkas, but it is only when he hears zydeco on the radio that he discovers a new inspiration and applies the fast tempo of zydeco to his accordion playing. But the town's polka scene frowns upon such deviation from tradition. Undaunted, Schultze packs his instrument and heads to zydeco's birthplace, Louisiana. This film is rated PG for mild language.
July 27: The Secret Life of Walter Mitty (2013, 114m)
Ben Stiller directs and stars in James Thurber's story of a daydreamer who escapes his anonymous life by disappearing into a world of fantasies filled with heroism, romance, and action. When his job, along with that of his co-worker (Kristen Wiig), is threatened, Walter takes action in the real world, embarking on a global journey that turns into an adventure more extraordinary than anything he could have imagined. This film is rated PG for some crude comments, language, and action violence.
Doors open at 5:45pm. Showtime is at 6:00pm. Refreshments will be provided.
