Celebrate Clementine Hunter, a Black folk artist from Louisiana, and create your version of her famous painting, Zinnias in a Pot.
Clementine Hunter did not begin painting until she was in her 50s. She is called a memory artist, as her paintings were created from what she had seen. A descendant of slaves with no formal schooling, Clementine found paints and brushes left behind by a visiting artist at Melrose Plantation and began painting images – on whatever she could find – of daily life around her. She created around 5,000 pieces of art, including her famous nine-panel murals depicting the life of the Creole community along the Cane River in the early twentieth century.
