Hear about the deepest underwater archaeological project ever attempted in the Gulf of Mexico. Registration required.
Four thousand feet below the choppy seas of the Gulf of Mexico lies the remains of a 200-year-old shipwreck. The Mardi Gras Shipwreck sank about 35 miles off the coast of Louisiana. The shipwreck, whose real identity remains a mystery, lay forgotten at the bottom of the sea until it was discovered in 2002 by an oilfield inspection crew. Learn more about the 2007 expedition to study the site and recover artifacts from Karla Oesch, Collections Manager with the Office of Cultural Development's Louisiana Division of Archaeology.
A collection of artifacts from the Mardi Gras Shipwreck will be on exhibit in Gonzales throughout June during regular library hours. Click the button to register or call (225) 647-3955.
