Join award winning author, Daniel Brook, as he speaks on the story of race during reconstruction. Registration required.
The Donaldsonville Juneteenth Committee is excited to announce an addition to the 30th Juneteenth Celebration - A Juneteenth Author Talk presented by the City of Donaldsonville, Parish of Ascension, and CF Industries in partnership with Ascension Parish Library, Ascension Parish Sheriff’s Office, and Southern University Law Center.
Daniel Brook, journalist and author, will discuss his book, The Accident of Color: A Story of Race in Reconstruction, and the research methods that enabled him to bring to life Reconstruction-era civil rights struggles. In his book, Brook journeys to nineteenth-century New Orleans and Charleston, where free biracial people exercised many rights of citizenship and fought to secure them for all after the Civil War. Tragically, violent political backlash culminated in the Jim Crow laws that would legalize segregation and usher in a binary racial regime that endures to this day.
Daniel Brook’s work has appeared in Harper’s, The New York Times Magazine, The New Yorker, and Legal Affairs and has garnered numerous awards. Brook’s research and writing have been supported by fellowships from institutions including the Library of Congress and Tulane University’s New Orleans Center for the Gulf South.
