Beyond the familiar narratives, learn intriguing layers about this historical giant.
Most people have heard pieces of Dr. Martin Luther King Jr.’s “I Have a Dream” speech that he spoke on August 28, 1963, where about 250,000 people gathered at the Lincoln Memorial in Washington, D.C. However, there is more about this great man than most people know. Dr. Shelisa Theus, chair and associate professor of English at Baton Rouge Community College (BRCC) will dive deeper into Dr. King’s life. Dr. Theus will focus on King’s famous “Letter from Birmingham Jail,” his relationship with white moderate ministers, the government, and the racial and social dynamics of that period.
Dr. Theus is a member of Sigma Tau Delta (National English Society) and Secretary/Treasurer for African Americans in Louisiana Higher Education. She also completed extensive training in Cultural Responsiveness to enhance her approach to equity and inclusion.
